The idea for Close-Knit was born one day while Sophia and Melanie were (avoiding) studying for finals. The primary inspiration behind Close-Knit was Sophia's experience with Project HEALTH (www.projecthealth.org) through which she saw how sorely the organizations that provide utilities assistance needed funds and how much difference something like heat and electricity can make in someone's life.

The Knitters
Sophia Li is a student at Brown University. She likes persimmons, peaches, plums and pastries. Not to mention words like “prowess” and “promontory.”
Preferred beverage: Tea, green or chamomile.

Amy Heuer is also a Brown student and, coincidentally, resides in the same room as Sophia. She likes long walks in the park, long scarves and long conversations into the wee hours of the morning (perhaps making up for her own height?)
Preferred beverage: Chocolate caliente
Write to Amy
Beth Spriggs, student and knitter extraordinaire, prefers Wisconsin to Manhattan, boots to sandals and tea to most anything.

The Graphic Designer
Maria Macrina is a young lady of surprising skills. She’s handy with a baking pan, a soccer ball, a computer program, and several varieties of power tools.
Preferred beverage: Espresso (Southern-Italian style)
The Webmaster
Melanie Garunay leads the life of an ordinary college student by day, and masters the Web by night (literally.) Spiderman ain’t got nothin’ on this girl. She has yet to learn how to knit.
Preferred beverage: Coffee
Write to Melanie
In May 2008, some friends who liked to knit realized that knitting for other people is far more fun than doing it for themselves. Who needs 30 scarves, anyway? They started Close Knit, a small business that sells re-useable knit coffee sleeves in Providence, RI.
All of their profits are donated to the Salvation Army's Good Neighbor Energy Fund, which provides financial assistance to Rhode Island residents to help them pay their utility bills. This includes low-income families and families with unexpected medical bills-- every home should be warm and safe.
